Nottingham Hospitals Charity’s Cystic Fibrosis Campaign
Nottingham Hospitals Charity is launching an exciting Cystic Fibrosis Campaign to raise £2.5m for a planned new unit for cystic fibrosis patients at Nottingham’s City Hospital.
There is currently no dedicated area for adult cystic fibrosis (CF) patients in Nottingham, so four side rooms are used to treat 130 patients. Many patients spend several months of each year in hospital and have to travel from across the East Midlands and further afield to come to the CF clinic in Nottingham, so we want to create a ‘home in hospital’ for them.
Cystic fibrosis is the UK’s most common life-threatening inherited disease, with one in 25 people carrying the gene. The current average age of survival is 36 years and there is currently no cure. CF affects the internal organs, especially the lungs and the digestive system, clogging them up with thick sticky mucus and making it hard to breathe and digest food.
One of the devastating aspects of the condition is that patients cannot mix with other CF sufferers due to the risk of cross-infection. This means that patients must be treated in separate rooms, not on a ward together.
The new unit will include separate en-suite bedrooms, with sitting areas and video links between rooms so CF patients can talk to one another without the risk of cross-infection. Other facilities will include family rooms, gym equipment, gardens and outdoor exercise space, as CF patients need exercise to help their lung function.
